In an article in Nature entitled “Three years to safeguard our planet”, signed by over sixty leading scientists, politicians and business, experts advise that we have three years to make significant changes to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions or face the prospect of dangerous global warming. They identify six key milestones to prioritise action
- Renewables to account for at least 30% of electricity supply, up from 23.7% in 2015
- Fully decarbonise buildings and infrastructure by 2050 costing $300 billion per annum
- Electric vehicles to account for at least 15% on new car sale, up from current level of 1%
- Land use, reduce deforestation and start reforestation
- Industry to halve emissions by 2050
- Finance sector needs to rethink deployment of capital towards climate action
